BOO! Bird Feeders

A FUN and CHEAP kids activity that may even give the birds a fright!

This kids activity was inspired by my Aunt Kathy…..she lives thirty-ish minutes away from us and always have the best time when we visit! Her backyard backs up to a vast expanse of woods and right off her screened-in porch she must have at least five to ten birdhouses/bird stands lined up next to each other…..filled with birdseed. What I witnessed…..was truly amazing and almost UNREAL…..thirty Cardinals…..no, forty…..maybe even fifty Cardinals swooped down from the treetops and surrounded the bird stands. THEY WERE EVERYWHERE…..and it was the most divine moment I have ever experienced. I looked at my Aunt Kathy and she said, “those are the best kind of pets to have…..the wild ones.”

Once I picked my jaw up from the ground…..I immediately added birdseed to my Amazon cart…..CLICK! Pictured below are the ingredients and equipment needed to create my BOO! Bird Feeders. Since it is the month of October, I thought it was more than suitable to use Halloween cookie cutters!

To begin, pour the packets of gelatin into the water; let sit for one to two minutes.

Transfer gelatin water to a saucepan; bring to a boil and stir until gelatin has completely dissolved.

Remove from heat and let the gelatin cool/set for five minutes. Stir in the birdseed.

Line the sheet pans with parchment paper; place the cookie cutters on the parchment lined pans. Using a spoon, scoop the birdseed into the cookie cutters; press down on the cutters with another piece of parchment paper to compress the birdseed.

Using a straw, press down and twist back and forth at the top of each birdseed filled cookie cutter; this will create a hole for the hemp/twine.

Place the sheet pans in the freezer for twenty minutes to allow the bird feeders to set. Take the sheet pans out of the freezer and allow the birds feeders to sit at room temperature for an additional ten minutes.

Delicately, push the bird feeders out of the cookie cutters with your thumbs. Thread a piece of hemp/twine through each hole and tie to create a loop for hanging. SCARE ALL THE BIRDS!
