LOL Surprise Paper Mache Halloween Costume
A DIY tutorial for all of the kids out there that want to be the actual plastic ball the LOL Surprise Doll comes in! This is a step-by-step guide that anyone can do!
To begin this amazing costume, you will need a few supplies! I ordered the Large Latex Balloons from Amazon (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)
Blow up one of the latex balloons and gently place the bottom (tied piece) into the basin of one large mixing bowl. (This will stabilize the balloon while you work.)
Using scissors, cut the newspaper into long 1″-2″ strips.
In the other large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and water until it becomes a thick, but still liquid consistency; add the newspaper strips (10 or so at a time).
Take one newspaper strip from the mixture and gently slide one finger on each side and squeeze the mixture in a downward motion until most of the mixture has returned to the bowl. Apply the newspaper strip to the balloon (vertically); starting at the top. Continue this proccess until the entire balloon is covered.
Allow the paper mache balloon to dry overnight for a full 24 hours. After 24 hours, use a chip brush to apply Mod Podge Sealer over the entire balloon. Allow the ballon to dry in sunlight by a window or glass door for 2 hours. After 2 hours, apply a second coat of Mod Podge Sealer. Allow the balloon paper mache to finish drying over night once more.
For the next step, use a permanent marker to sketch a neck hole (big enough to allow their head to go through, but not so big that it will still hang on your child’s shoulders) and arm holes.
Flip the balloon paper mache over and pop the balloon. It will still seam flimsy and lose shape…..THIS IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN; DO NOT WORRY! Using scissors, cut the neck and arm holes out.
Now, while the paper mache shell is still flipped over, begin blowing up the second balloon inside of the shell. When the balloon is inflated to the mold size of the shell, tie the balloon. Flip the balloon paper mache back over and reinsert into the mixing bowl to stabilize once again. Spray the Paper Mache with aqua spray paint and allow to dry for one hour.
Once dry, using white acrylic paint and a paint brush, paint the base layer of the LOL Surprise Logo and LOL Doll.
After the base layer has dried, finish painting the designs with any color of acrylic paint to your liking.
When the acrylic paint has dried, flip the balloon paper mache over and POP the second balloon. Trim the bottom hole to allow for more movement when your child wears the costume. For the next step, apply 3″ pieces of duct tape around the neck, arm and bottom holes to reinforce the edges and prevent ripping (it also provides a level of comfort for your child while the wear the costume).
If your duct tape does not match the spray paint of the costume, NO WORRIES! Spray paint over the duct tape to match the body!
When the spray painted duct tape has dried, spray a matte sealer over the entire costume to finish. Voila!
